Massage is considered one of the oldest known healing modalities, records of its use date back three thousand years.  Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems.  Even in our daily lives, without thinking, we rub injuries and aching muscles.

Today, Massage is an accepted part of many physical rehabilitation programs and has proven beneficial to many chronic conditions such as low-back pain, arthritis, and bursitis.  Perhaps even more beneficial, massage helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday living.

During a massage session, your therapist will work with you to determine the type of massage modality that is right for you.  The basic types of massage modalities are Swedish, and Myofascial (or Deep Tissue).  In addition to these there are many advanced modalities that can be incorporated into a massage session.  Speak to your Therapist if you are interested in one of these modalities.

Swedish massage has a lighter touch and is a more superficial massage.  While the deeper structures and tensions of your body are addresses, the focus remains on calming the muscle system, improving circulation, promoting relaxation and a feeling of general well being.

Myofascial or Deep Tissue Massage has a slower pace and a deeper focus.  The focus of the Myofascial massage is to work with the connective tissue surrounding the muscles to release greater tension, remove adhesions between muscle groups, and promote a deeper feeling of relaxation.  This modality is great for athletes as it help to keep individual muscles defined so they work more efficiently.
